English Education Preparation Of Teachers. Great article http://bit.ly/hOXgk2

Curious about teaching and travelling abroad? Learn and read more about TESOL certification.

The field of English education includesresearch and practice related to both the teaching and learning of English/language arts and the preparation of English teachers. As befits a broad and comprehensive subject matter, the field of English education includes a wide range of topics and lines of research. Under the umbrella of English education, one might find research on rhetoric and the teaching of writing, on the literature curriculum and different approaches to the teaching of literature, as well as a range of topics related to communication, visual literacy, drama, journalism, and language more broadly. In fact, one of the persistent challenges facing the field of English has been the difficulty of self-definition, as Peter Elbow (1990) plaintively inquires in the title of his book, What is English? Others have asked, equally plaintively, what important topics might not be considered the province of English teachers. This lack of self-definition leads to what Robert Protherough termed “a pervasive uncertainty about the nature of the discipline” (p. 1).

The sheer scope of the subject matter and its blurry definition have its roots in the history of the subject matter. In a definitive history of the field, Arthur Applebee demonstrated the various ways in which the subject has been defined over time, from its first emergence as a major school subject in the 1890s. While earlier battles focused more on the relative centrality of classical versus vernacular texts, more recent skirmishes have tackled the role of literature–and the type of literature–in the English classroom. One of the enduring themes in the history of English education has been the search for a way to unify the subject.

Teach English in Bhutan. Find out more at http://bit.ly/e8hD8l

Want to go to different countries and areas? Fulfill your dreams of travelling and teach English. Learn more about TESOL certification.

Bhutan is a fantastic place to teach English.  In fact, the 2009 Happy Planet Index (HPI) rate Bhutan as #17 in terms of happiest places to live and in 2006 Business Week rated it the happiest country in Asia... not bad considering the UK rated 74th, Canada rated 89th and the USA rated 114th out of 143 countries rated for the Happy Planet Index.

Life in Bhutan is relatively simple and very peaceful.  People talk.  People walk.  People dance slowly and methodically with incredible emotion and belief.  People are kind.  There are few "creature comforts" in Bhutan.  Bhutanese people are not attached to their phones or ipods or laptops.  This move slower.  There often is no electricity or plumbing or internet but there is a greater balance to things and in particular, many people find that there is a greater balance to them... the tourists who come for 2 week excursions don't get the same experience as a teacher who becomes part of the culture.

There are about 700,000 people living in Bhutan and almost 50% of this population is under the age of 15.  As you can imagine, with a vast majority of the population so young, education is incredibly important.

Tiger's nests, the Himalayas, the wonderful people, and much more, make Bhutan an amazing place to teach English.

#ESL teachers go abroad. Great article at http://bit.ly/eO5SO1

Want to fulfill your dreams of travelling? Travel abroad and teach English with TESOL certification.

Students already know the seemingly endless amount of time, funds and effort it takes to get a solid education, and all this is put in to get a rewarding job. For two

Brock University teachers, however, these rewards had to go even beyond the boundaries of their teaching careers.

30-year-old Eric McKay M.A., and 22-year-old Rachel Adair are travelling to some of the poorest areas in South-East Asia to do humanitarian work. The self proclaimed "Port Colborne hicks" will be teaching English for free in some of the poorest regions in the world, while creating a documentary to raise poverty awareness. McKay has already had experience in six Asian countries, while Adair will be entering the field for the first time.

The word "poor" does not quite do justice to the state of McKay and Adair's destinations. In their press release, they give an example of one school having a, "drunk teacher in Laos taking home a girl on an elephant-taxi from the bowling-disco-karaoke-brothel, who unfortunately likes him only because he is a 'rich Caucasian.'" The places documented by the two teachers will be some the poorest imaginable.

There seems to be more than physical wealth involved with the word poor for McKay and Adair. The teachers intend to change the popular definition and bring awareness to different kinds of poverty. After all, there are plenty of people with little to no money who live happy and healthy lives.

Jacqueline Spalding, Associate Director, ESL Services at Brock explained that many ESL teachers train and then travel abroad to get a different teaching experience.

"This is what ESL teachers do. Many teachers go overseas to teach," she said. "My first teaching experience [overseas] was in Africa."

This may be a calling to unemployed undergraduates, or fresh graduates who are panicking for work. McKay and Adair wish to make others aware that there are exciting and interesting business opportunities available. Altruism, risk, and a healthy dose of adventure-lust may send more students down a similar path of the previous Brock students (especially if the concurrent education student population continues to rise and the teacher retirement level remains low).

Although not specified, one can only imagine the amount of unconventional practice needed to film a documentary of this magnitude. The press release described the teachers would have to utilize their adaptability, altruism and flare for mischief in order for success.

Of course, more will be revealed as the pair delves deeper into their new commitment and completes the final product.

Combine Language Learning and Technology. Must read article at http://bit.ly/fVPnHS

Curious in teaching English abroad? Learn more and get a TESOL certification.

Are you looking to boost your English language teaching or learning skills to yet ever higher levels? Would you like to stimulate more interest in your language classes or break out of a slump or plateau? Combine the use of a variety of language learning techniques with continually developing technology to spur your successes. Here are some useful ideas and web sites to get you started.

BLOGS

A Web Log or Blog, is not unlike a dairy you keep online. You can write instructions, an essay or post any type of information you want. Graphics and images can be included to illustrate the written material. Sound and audio-visual files can also be placed into a blog for added impact. A teacher can post a reading or assignment where students can comment right online. No papers, no clutter and you can view it almost any time. Blogs are becoming easier to use and access and many sites allow you to set one up for free.

ONLINE VIDEO / AUDIO

Most professionals have an e-mail address or two. Your e-mail can now become a communicative tool between you and the learners. E-mail can now also include the use of images and sound or audio-visual clips, as well as the message text. Learners can send in assignments as attachments or pasted into the body of the e-mail. They can ask questions and receive timely feedback without waiting for the next class session. Teachers can send out instructions, updates or other information to learners individually, or as a group also without having to wait for the next scheduled class session.

No computer? No problem. In many parts of the world e-cafes are so cheap they’re actually a viable alternative that students can easily afford. Whole “communities” of young learners are based on hangouts at e-cafes in some cultures. Talk to your students about it. You might be surprised.

USE OF ONLINE RESOURCES for TEACHING / LEARNING

The use of online games, EFL practice sites student and teacher forums, communities and activities has exploded in recent months in many parts of the world. Virtual communities and online reference libraries now enable learners to problem-solve, research a paper or to more quickly complete assignments that formerly would have taken disproportionately large amounts of time to complete.

Foreign Language Teaching, Learning and 'Traditional Testing'. Nice article at http://bit.ly/hYim47

Curious in teaching English abroad? Learn more about TESOL certification.

Testing, Teaching, Testing

Traditional testing of foreign language learners usually consists of specific questions that tap into limited cognitive processes and skills. Although foreign language students will continue to sit traditional tests and formal examinations, such tests do not assess adequately or play a part in enhancing the higher-order thinking skills of any students including foreign language learners.

Traditional Testing Easier for Foreign Language Teachers

The reasons why these types of tests continue to exist in the foreign language classroom fall into two main categories - teaching and pragmatics.

Firstly, one of the most important factors affecting teaching is time. Time has become an even bigger issue as the classrooms have grown larger and foreign language teachers have to find efficient methods of assessing learning at a particular point in time. For the foreign language teacher, traditional tests are easy to write and mark since they have set standards for rating or judgment.

Teaching English in Singapore – Lucrative and Rewarding Jobs Await. Great article at http://bit.ly/fsswXz

For too long Singapore has been dominated by its larger cousins in the global market for TEFL/ESL destinations. It is natural to head to Thailand and Vietnam, completing ignoring this inspiring compact island. No more should the Lion City just be a refuge to teachers from Thailand looking for some civilisation while on a holiday break. Lucrative TEFL/ESL opportunities exist that allow teachers to save and provide for a lifestyle teachers in Thailand and Vietnam can only dream of. Salaries are high, classes involve mostly adults, and schedules are usually done in blocks – all highly rated in any TEFL/ESL job.

Singapore has a lot to offer which other countries don’t. Firstly, in the region of South East Asia, TEFL/ESL salaries far outstrip those of neighbouring countries. Teachers can expect to start at USD 2500 a month, most likely beating the USD 3000 mark. While the cost of accommodation may seem high on this small island, other costs such as transport and food are incredibly cheap when compared to the Europe, and even the US. This provides for a very comfortable lifestyle indeed, where teachers can experience the world famous diverse cuisine, spend money travelling, and of course save.

The job search in Singapore is undeniably best done on the ground when you get there. This is convenient as Singapore is a major international flight hub, and visitors from native English speaking countries can enter freely for stays between 30 – 90 days. While arriving with nothing may worry some teachers on a shoe-string budget, it is important to remember that unlike Japan, costs are low, and the market isn’t already saturated by other English teachers in the same boat. Some jobs are advertised online, mainly on TEFL.com and ESL Cafe’s international job board. However, these may not necessarily be the best deals, and the on the ground job search allows you to negotiate an all round better deal.

If your mother tongue is not English, speaking to your child in English may not be a good idea as it is likely to feel forced and unnatural. Here is a list of practical steps you can take to help your young English learner to excel. These strategies can be used for introducing any language, but this article focuses on English. The author used these methods for teaching her children French, with great success.

From birth, play songs in English to your ESL baby.  Bedtime and whilst travelling in the car are good opportunities.  Choose songs with repetitive and catchy choruses.  Just hearing the English words is great “ear massage” and the English pronunciation and intonation will become embedded in your child’s cognitive awareness.  The aim is to expose your child to the nuances and sounds of the language.  Tunes resound in our heads long after the music is turned off, making song a great medium for language learning.

Basic Readiness To Teach English In Korea. Nice article at http://bit.ly/gJtfFT

Want to have a wonderful time travelling while staying employed? Teach English abroad and get a TESOL certification.

Take on the challenge of teaching English in Korea while more opportunities are offered. Individuals with strong English skills can find work more easily in the southern part of the country. The trip may be a short term job before traveling on or a scholarly endeavor. But, respected committed teachers will immerse more fully into the fascinating culture and culinary delights.

Employee contracts, called ‘ko yong kyeyasko’ can be negotiated with schools for all grades, at colleges or universities. Government and corporations want instruction in strong conversation skills for international communication. The training and experience of an individual is directly related to employment opportunities.

University postings usually require individuals with a Master’s Degree in TESOL. For school students employers prefer to hire those with a degree in anything. Private institutions called ‘Hakwons’ have different specifications. All teachers increase their employability by completing the TEFL: Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Certification is available online or in a more expensive classroom setting.

The reliability of some institutions can be doubtful, find a reputable location first. Also check for established agencies, that can connect teachers with institutions. Check ahead for fees. These people may be helpful even you don’t wish to take any of their services.

Upfront, teachers should know their salaries, whether by the month, day or hour. The dates for payday should be clear. Some teaching jobs, mostly at universities, are tax exempt, at any other location taxes range from 5 to 10 per cent. Medical insurance, sometimes provided by the institution, should be well defined. In large cities hospitals with English competent staff would be helpful. In smaller locations the response to your medical emergency may be different.

Classroom hours can begin early in the morning or even have a split shift. Recognize the impact of the set-up. With the appropriate authorities discuss severance pay, due to you, and a possible return air fare. Ask about class sizes. Housing in Seoul is expensive, negotiating good housing is important. With luck you will have decent housing close to the school. Check online for a work Visa.

Korean cuisine, with traditions that go back over 2000 years vary by the region. ‘Kimchee’, which goes by many names is a fermented vegetable staple, sometimes very spicy. Alcohol is served with some ritual at meal time with guests. This country is more conservative than those in the West and outsiders should respect the cultural differences.

As a means of appreciating another culture with the satisfaction of teaching, of reaching out, this work is ideal. Teaching English in Korea could change your outlook in life.

A need for better Thai teachers of English. Great article http://bit.ly/eZI2oO

Want to fulfill your dreams of travelling? Teach English and travel around the world! Start your career and get a TESOL certification.

In his Reflections (BP, Jan 4), Pichai Chuensuksawadi touches on many salient points about the need for educational reform in Thailand, but none more salient than those towards the end of his column, in which he discusses the need for an emphasis on English language training and good teachers.

In the first instance Thailand must start producing its own teachers of the English language who are professional and competent to teach English to their fellow Thai students as a foreign language.

At the moment, in my experience, too many Thai English-language teachers can barely speak English themselves, let alone being let loose to teach it to their acquiescent students.

There should be an intensive programme to improve the skills of Thai English teachers with the aim of reducing the reliance on so-called native English-speaking teachers.

There are many highly qualified and professional native English-speaking teachers dedicatedly working at all levels of the educational system in Thailand, and I do not mean to demean their professionalism or their integrity. But at the same time there are many backpacking Khao San Road degree-holder charlatans who are working in Thailand under false premises and undermining the system. They may speak English, but they cannot effectively teach it.

The aim must be to replace them with trained and professional Thai English teachers.

The benefits of learning a foreign language. Why? Must read article http://bit.ly/fTu3kV

Intersted in teaching English abroad? Learn more about TESOL certification.

There are lots of contradictory researches about this topic but it is something that we have to read about and learn about from our own experiences. Now I will focus on the benefits of learning English as a foreign language.

In 2007 I wrote about how to teach English nowadays. I still think the same. Teaching English is not teaching just the language but the culture. Why? Because the understanding of another culture expands people’s horizons. The common arguments for learning English in our country are “getting a better job” or “for traveling”. And it’s true. English is in full development, and knowing or not knowing the language markedly increased the difference between those who can and cannot seize the opportunities of globalization. But we cannot focus just on that. There are many other benefits.

#TEFL courses Chiang Mai, TEFL Thailand. Must read article at http://bit.ly/i9aPeQ

Location

The TEFL International course in northern Thailand is held in Chiang Mai, which was once once the capital city of the Lan Na Kingdom and is now the capital of North Thailand. Chiang Mai was founded more than 700 years ago, and is one of the oldest cities in Thailand; it’s recognized as having an independent cultural personality of its own. The Thai people love their beloved northern capital: a quaint, walled and moated city surrounded by a beautiful landscape, stemming from the foothills of the Himalayas, of mountains, rivers, forests, waterfalls, meadows and valleys. As a location, Chiang Mai offers a unique experience for TEFL International TEFL Courses in Thailand.

Many feel that Chiang Mai is an essential part of any visit to Thailand. Located more than 700km northwest of Bangkok, Chiang Mai has more than 300 temples, some of which date back over 500 years, of which an impressive 121 are within the municipal boundary. This is close to the total number in Bangkok, and makes the old city centre of Chiang Mai visually striking. The historical architecture of Chiang Mai has evidence of Lan Na, Thai, Mon, Sri Lankan and Burmese influences, with ornate woodcarvings decorating most temples. These include the magnificent Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, built in 1383 at an altitude of 1300 meters above the city, Wat Pra Singh, possibly the cities most famous temple and constructed between 1385-1400 and Wat Chiang Mun, its oldest temple, said to date from the founding year of the city (1292). Chiang Mai is also an exciting, modern city, which has successfully managed to blend its unique cultural identity with an increasingly modern side.
