Advice for potential #TEFL teachers. View great article at http://bit.ly/hug63j

This was actually an email I sent to a friend but I thought it would make a good post.

Teaching English was a dream of mine for the last six years (ever since I returned from London) and it seemed like a smart way to get to know the culture, practice Spanish and travel a little around the country. The Costa Rica that everyone talks about is outside of San Jose. However, there aren’t many jobs outside of the central valley. Most schools on the coast have long waiting lists. San Jose is very rough but it’s the main transportation hub to any part of the country.

For most employers, a desirable TEFL teacher will have a Bachelors and a TEFL certificate, but you can teach English fine without either of these things. TEFL or TESOL certification program is a program taught to prepare people for teaching English. There are online programs and in class programs, and many of these schools have websites. The cost is $200-2000, depending on the type of program you use. A few employers will only accept teachers who have the in class certification, but if you can show that you’re a good teacher they’re more than happy to take an online certificate. It takes about 1 to 6 months to get a certificate, depending on your pace and the class you take.
